Lions Clubs International serves people throughout the world. Globally, Lions clubs are known for their commitment to blindness prevention and services to the visually impaired. This service began when Helen Keller challenged the Lions to become her "knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness" during the association's 1925 International Convention.

In addition, as the world's largest, youngest and most active service organization, Lions are recognized for their dedication to community service and improvement. Projects include eye and hearing screenings and related services, diabetes awareness, opportunities to improve the day-to-day life in communities, scholarships, youth projects, and assistance to those in need.

Through membership in a Lions club, people not only help those in need, but have opportunities to develop personal friendships and gain valuable leadership skills. Membership in Lions Clubs is open to men and women of legal majority and good reputation in the community, and is by invitation only. The young people, between the ages of 12 to 18, may also be organized into a Leo Club, also affiliated with a Lions Club. Leo Clubs perform charitable service projects and have similar objectives as Lions Clubs. Depending upon age, an individual may belong to a Leo club. Those interested in membership should contact the local Lions club. If unable to locate a Lions club, E-mail a request to:  District Governor providing name, address and telephone numbers in the request.

Since 1952, the Lions of Massachusetts have given over $20 million dollars to help eliminate blindness. Last year alone, the Lions of District 33-A raised over $109,000 for Massachusetts Lions Eye Research. These funds will be granted to a number of Massachusetts research facilities to help cure and eliminate the causes of preventable blindness.

The Lions of District 33-A also support

• Lions Clubs International Foundation which manages the International Sight First II program, a worldwide blindness prevention program that aims to eliminate preventable and reversible blindness; a disaster relief and rebuilding effort agency and additional efforts to support community and sight related needs

• Vision and Hearing screenings

   

• Free quality eye care and eye glasses for the needy

   

• Guide dogs for the visually impaired

   

• Clara Barton Diabetes Camp, a camp for children with diabetes
  

• National Education of Assistance Dogs Services, dogs for people with hearing or physical disabilities

   

• Lazarus, organ donation awareness

   

• Collection of used eyeglasses (including sunglasses) for distribution in developing countries

   

• And innumerable other charitable and service-oriented efforts.
